What to Pack for a Weekend on the Riviera
It’s perhaps one of the most chic and glamorous dates in the entertainment calendar and I was lucky enough to attend this year. Yes, of course I’m talking about the Cannes Film Festival. Touching down in a balmy Cote d’Azure for the 71st edition of the world famous festival I couldn’t wait to soak up the atmosphere, celeb watch and ‘climb’ the infamous red carpet at the Palais du Festival, the venue for the fortnight long celebration of film.
Cannes, as you can imagine, is a snazzy spot so even when going casual you want to feel like you fit in with the locals, not to mention the hoards of people who descend on the town for the duration of the festival. This can be tricky but it doesn’t need to be. My top tip, keep it simple.
For my first outfit, I anchored my look around this strong Hackett frame, a great style for everyday wear. I paired them with a nautical vibe (when on the Riviera...!) with this vertical stripe polo in shades of blue and navy. White jeans complete the summery seaside vibes for an uncomplicated and comfortable look.
Next up, it was red carpet time. Now the thing about Cannes is that it’s such a well-oiled machine. Like all good soirées it beings with an aperitif overlooking the sea and as the sun sets. For this I needed a slick pair of sunnies that would compliment my tuxedo. I went classic in an all black two-piece ensemble with satin lapel blazer. By their very nature, a tux is formal and structured so for contrast I paired it with these round shape Balmain frames. These are a neat, slim profile so when the sun set and it was time to go into the venue for the screening, they slipped seamlessly into my breast pocket.
The day after the night before calls for a no-fuss outfit that covered me for a smart casual lunch on the beach. The famous La Croisette is where all the people watching takes place so you want to look the part. I went for this light knit polo with contrasting black collar trim. The buttonless style of this top makes it feel a little smarter than your average polo. These Tommy Hilfiger frames were the perfect accessory. The silver metallic frame with double brow bar was just the right side of fashion. My favourite black (slim fit not skinny) jeans and a pair woven leather and suede hightops completed the look.
Tuxedo aside, all of these looks are ideal for those summer occasions that call for something a little smarter than your usual casual look.
